On a mountaintop above the fort is a lookout that scans all the way from the Bradshaw mountains and the Agua Fria plateau to the west, to the Lower Verder river and its settlements miles to the east.

Metate's perimeter wall was clearly carefully constructed –its interior angles correspond with that of an octagon; 135°.
